Book Review: How to Survive a Slasher by Justine Pucella Winans
When I first stumbled upon How to Survive a Slasher, the title alone was enough to pique my curiosity. Slasher films have long been part of my personal horror lexicon, but a horror-comedy that not only flips the genre on its head but is told through a queer lens? I was absolutely in! Plus, having loved Winans’s debut, Bianca Torres Is Afraid of Everything, I couldn’t wait to dive back into their imaginative world. Spoiler alert: this book exceeded my expectations in every way.
At the heart of the story is CJ, a genderfluid teen marked not only by their identity but by a horrifying family legacy of slasher-style killings. This sets the stage for a cat-and-mouse intrigue that is equal parts thrilling and absurd. CJ’s character is a breath of fresh air, blending humor with profound vulnerability as they navigate the trials of adolescence while grappling with the absurdity of being thrust into the role of the "Final Girl." The inclusion of their nonbinary and genderfluid identity feels authentic and refreshing, making CJ someone you can’t help but root for.
The supporting cast, particularly Sebas and Nadia, adds delightful layers to the narrative. Sebas is a charming departure from the typical “book boyfriend” mold, and Nadia’s fierce loyalty is a celebration of friendship. The family dynamic is another standout element, with CJ’s family hilariously training in “murder chase readiness” due to their town’s violent history. And can we talk about Chekov’s Gun, CJ’s emotional support cat? I found myself rooting for this quirky furball as much as CJ! The fact that Chekov may be a recurring character in Winans’s future works has me eagerly anticipating more feline antics.
What I truly appreciated was how Winans cleverly utilizes meta-commentary to shine a light on genre tropes. By analyzing components like the "Final Girl" and the ever-ominous “Big Bad Wolf” killer, Winans both honors and critiques the horror genre. The incorporation of pop culture references—from webcomics to a nostalgic nod to Warrior Cats—made every page resonate with me as a fellow nerd. These moments of self-aware humor made the storyline even more engaging and relatable.
The book’s pacing is brisk, filled with escalating tension and just the right amount of gore, creating a horror experience that thrills without overwhelming. I particularly enjoyed how the town’s festivities surrounding its violent past added a darkly comedic edge, lending a surreal quality to the narrative as CJ untangles the chilling mystery. While some twists felt predictable, Winans masterfully kept me guessing with layers of mystery that subverted expectations.
In sum, How to Survive a Slasher is an engaging, clever, and emotionally resonant tale that transcends typical horror fare. It breathes new life into the genre with its inclusive representation and meta-humor while also addressing poignant themes of identity and family connection. If you enjoy a good laugh amidst the fear, or if you’re simply a fan of horror who appreciates a fresh perspective, this book should definitely be on your reading list.
As Halloween approaches, I found this book to be the perfect treat—equal parts thrilling and insightful. Justine Pucella Winans has solidified their place on my must-read list, and I can’t wait to see what they whip up next! Thank you, Netgalley and Bloomsbury USA, for the ARC that made my reading experience all the more enjoyable.
