Book Review: Make The Play (Colorado Storm #2) by Hailey

Have you ever picked up a book that, within the first few pages, you just know is going to transport you? That was my experience with Make The Play. As a devoted follower of Hailey’s work, I’ve been eagerly anticipating Zoe’s story since finishing Seal the Deal. Spoiler alert: she absolutely delivered! If you’re looking for a whirlwind of emotions, laughter, and undeniably sizzling chemistry, you need to dive into this one.

The heart of Make The Play beautifully revolves around Zoe and Chase, who embody the delightful push-and-pull of a classic “frenemies to lovers” narrative. Zoe, our fierce and unapologetic heroine, doesn’t waver throughout the story. Her witty retorts and sharp comebacks consistently keep Chase on his toes. I loved how she matched him blow for blow, proving she was no damsel in distress but rather a challenge he was more than willing to face. As I read, I couldn’t help but cheer every time she reminded him of his place in their playful banter. The powerful dynamic between them was a dream to witness.

Chase, on the other hand, is the quintessential golden retriever of a partner—loyal and hopelessly smitten. His internal struggle to keep his feelings for Zoe at bay added layers to his character. Honestly, I found myself giggling, entirely lost in his pining. The way he dived into their “fake dating” arrangement, torn between wanting to protect Zoe and being completely entranced by her, was something to swoon over. The highlight of the book for me was his realization that he was "going to break my fucking heart.” It encapsulated the rawness of his emotions so perfectly; it felt like he was talking directly to me.

The writing style flows effortlessly. Hailey knows how to craft sentences that make you feel deeply. The pacing is spot-on, ensuring that while we enjoy the slow build-up of their romance, the intense moments are equally thrilling. The clever interplay of humor and passion keeps you turning the pages, eyes glued to the beautiful mess that is Zoe and Chase’s relationship.

And then, of course, there are the unforgettable one-liners that had me bursting with laughter and flipping back to re-read them. I mean, “you’re disgusting…take off your pants,” is such a bold opener, and chef’s kiss to the way it reflects their dynamic! Another gem that resonated with me was, “you always do that…find me in the noise.” It speaks volumes about the depth of their connection amidst the chaos.

In conclusion, if you’re a fan of fake dating tropes, found family vibes, or just love a good dose of opposites attracting (hello, black cat and golden retriever!), you’ll want to add Make The Play to your reading list. This book has left me yearning for the next installments in the Colorado Storm series, and I can’t wait to see what Hailey has in store for us next! Reading this was a complete joy, and I hope others find the same magic within its pages.
