Helloooo. I’ve finally pulled myself out of my reading slump, that wasn’t really a slump, but was. It doesn’t make sense, I know. But, basically for the past couple of weeks I’ve been reading and it felt somewhat like a chore, and I knew I had to read, but I felt apprehensive when doing so. This affected how I felt about books that I enjoyed, because I thought I didn’t enjoy it until I sat and looked back at it and thought, “no, that was actually a pretty cool book.” But not worry! I am back and enjoying reading once more!
Today the book that I am reviewing is a Young Adult Historical Fantasy novel. It was sent to me in a monthly subscription service “The Book Box Club” (which is amazing by the way) and I was drawn in by it as soon as I unwrapped it. The cover is stunning. Splinters of Scarlet by Emily Bain Murphy was first published on the 21st July 2020 by Pushkin Children’s Books. It spans 352 pages and is a fairly quick read. Or at least it was for me. I’ll pop the synopsis below:
Marit doesn’t like to use magic too often; it always comes with a heavy price. When her best friend Eve is adopted by a legendary former dancer and placed in an elite ballet program outside of Copenhagen, Marit draws upon her powers to secure a job with the wealthy family so that she can watch over her. But Marit has another, secret motivation: her father died while working for the dancer’s family, and she has reason to believe he was murdered.
While Marit adapts to her glittering new life in Copenhagen, she starts to investigate her father’s death in earnest. With every step she takes to get closer to the truth, she and everyone she loves is put in greater danger.
Soon Marit finds herself at the centre of a power struggle that goes all the way up to the king, and magic may be the only thing that can save her – if it doesn’t kill her first.
I’m not even going to go into the plot anymore on this book. Because I can tell you about it all day and it still wouldn’t do it justice. You need to read it and appreciate it. If you can’t tell, I loved this book. I’d even go as far as saying it may even be my new favourite. Emily Bane Murphy has created something here that is so special and highly impressive. First off the storyline. It was very original, very gripping and full of suspense and other wonderful things that you want from a book. It was full of emotion and I just couldn’t put it down. I had to know what happened next.
The characters were so well developed. I think these were some of the most beautiful characters I’ve ever read. There is so much depth created within the characters and so much meaning to every single one. The character’s personalities and beings just shine through beautifully. Also, the relationships and interactions between characters were so complex and impacted greatly within the plot line. They are truly a work of art.
I will always love a book that makes me feel something. I will always love a book that gets me invested emotionally. This does that. When I read that final page, my heart hurt because it was over. I felt lost and sad and happy. It is rare that I get that drawn into a book, but when I do it just makes me love it so much more.
I would definitely recommend this book. I want to shout about it to anyone who will listen! It is beautiful and amazing and I am so, so happy that this book was sent to me. THANK YOU THE BOOK BOX CLUB!!!
