We finally have another review! I know it’s been a little over a week since I last posted but Christmas has been keeping me busy! During this past crazy week I have been reading The Chestnut Man by Søren Sveistrup. I got this from Waterstones, I can’t remember when I first saw this book and thought I wanted to read it. Whether it was before I went into the store or if it was one I just came across I can’t say; but it sounded pretty good. I do love a good creepy book so I definitely had high hopes.
The book cover itself hints at the creepier side of the story. A silhouette of a woman running through some misty woods, Goose bump worthy. I also love how the red writing contrasts with the whites and greys of the imagery and how the letters are slightly hidden In places behind the trees. It’s a nice touch that adds to the feel of the books genre, I think. Also that tag line “As the leaves fall, He’s coming for you” is just simply chilling. You already know this book is meant to be terrifying.
The synopsis is longer than most thriller type books and is written in alternating lines of black and red which make them stand out nicely. The synopsis is as follows

A psychopath is terrorising the city
A young woman is found brutally murdered with one of her hands missing.
He leaves a chilling calling card

Examining the doll, forensics are shocked to find a fingerprint belonging to a young girl, kidnapped and murdered a year ago.
Can a new killer be the key to an old crime?

So the synopsis tells you a lot. You can almost already tell it’s going to be good. And let me tell you I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with as many twists as this one has. I was so invested from the start but I found it so hard to predict anything that happened in the book. I was wrong every time.
I will go on record saying that this book is incredibly creepy. It terrified me and there are some very graphic and very gruesome parts to it but, they are necessary for the book to be as successful and effective as it is. I feel like if it was watered down and pulled back a bit, it would just be like every other thriller/murder mystery out there. However, this is actually so scary. I think mostly because you know it could happen or it may even have happened somewhere in the world. Seivstrup tells the story in such a way that is so highly realistic; it’s like reading the news.
The characters were so well developed as well. The back stories were so complex and palpable, they didn’t feel fictional. I loved how I could empathise with them and react to them like I would with people I know. This book is one in its own and so powerful. Søren is a genius. I ten out of ten would recommend this book, just beware of the gore and the creep factor. But it’s worth it for such an amazing piece of art.
