Unnatural Causes by Dr Richard Shepherd

By  BookishBearx

Top forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd has performed over 23,000 autopsies. A detective in his own right, he must solve the mystery of sudden and unexplained deaths: how did this person die?

In the pursuit of the truth, he has tackled serial killers, natural disasters, ‘perfect murders’ and freak accidents. His evidence has put killers behind bars, freed the innocent and turned open-and-shut cases on their heads. Yet all this has come at huge personal cost.

In Unnatural Causes he tells us the story not only of the bodies and cases that have haunted him most, but also how to live a life steeped in death.

Unnatural Causes is a non-fiction, following the career of one of the UK’s top forensic pathologists. He tells us about the industry in which he works, the cases that he has worked and how this has all impacted himself and his life. I was so kindly sent my copy by @beccajbooks on instagram, as part of a random act of kindness. So it felt right that we buddy read the book together. I really enjoyed the buddy read!

I’ve read a lot of medical non-fiction over the years and it’s a genre that I tend to find really interesting. This book was no exception to that. Dr Shepherd did a great job with this book. I felt like I learned so much about forensic pathology, his writing style was very engaging and informative. He managed to stay quite personable and I felt like we got to see a lot about him and his life outside of the mortuary too.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book a lot more than I thought I would. I couldn’t put it down. If you are a little squeamish I would read with caution as he does go into detail on a lot of things. However, he does so carefully and respectfully. But if you’re looking for a book that gives good insight into the forensic industry, pathology and it’s possible effects on life and mental health, this book would be a good place to start.

I would 100% read more books by Dr Shepherd, I think he’s a fantastic writer, and his job and outlook on his job and life is very interesting.
