Book Review: You Were Never Not Mine by Monica Murphy
When I received the email from Valentine’s PR saying I’d been picked for an ARC of You Were Never Not Mine, I was practically buzzing with excitement. As someone who has been totally immersed in the Lancaster universe since day one, the anticipation for this latest installment was palpable. Monica Murphy has a knack for weaving stories that stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page, and this one was no exception—despite a few bumps along the way.
At its heart, You Were Never Not Mine explores themes of love, identity, and personal growth, centered around Sinclair and August Lancaster. From the very first chapter, I was captivated by the palpable chemistry between them. Their witty banter and the classic “I hate you, but I love you” tension made for a delightfully entertaining read. August is a bit of a red flag, embodying some of the characteristics that make Whitt Lancaster infamous, yet there’s something refreshingly different about him. Thank goodness he’s not just Whitt 2.0! Sinclair’s character adds depth; her resilience and charm shine through as she navigates her complicated feelings towards him.
The writing style is quintessentially Monica Murphy—rich, descriptive, and utterly engaging. I loved that this story is set in a college environment, offering a fresh backdrop against the tumultuous romance. The pacing felt just right, allowing me to savor the unfolding drama without the burden of a heavy third-act breakup. The humor sprinkled throughout made me chuckle and, at times, left me in pure stitches.
However, I can’t overlook the second epilogue. While the first was satisfying, the follow-up left me scratching my head, asking, “What on earth?” Given that it features a younger August contemplating his feelings for Sinclair when she was just a kid, it felt unnecessary and slightly off-putting. This, alongside some inconsistencies regarding character timelines, like Arabella and Rowan still being in high school, made me raise an eyebrow. It’s a shame because it somewhat overshadowed the otherwise stellar narrative.
Sinclair, with her unique charm, reminded me of Arabella, and I found myself wishing for more scenes with their dynamics. Although her friend didn’t fully win me over, I appreciated Sinclair’s growth and the resolution she found throughout the narrative.
Ultimately, You Were Never Not Mine isn’t going to resonate with everyone—especially those who may harbor a strong dislike for Whitt Lancaster—but I implore them to give August a chance. The book’s humor and chemistry almost make you forget the past, and I left the read feeling a bit lighter amidst the world’s chaos.
If you’ve loved the Lancaster series, you’ll find something to enjoy here. I genuinely believe this could serve as a fitting conclusion to the series, but I’d never say no to another adventure in this universe. For avid fans, college escapades with a splash of romance and witty banter, this book is a must-read. Happy reading, everyone!
