Happy Saturday! I’ve been reading this book for the past week or so and let me tell you it’s been wild. So I’m happy to be finally posting my review for it. R J Parker, very kindly approached me via my blog and sent me a copy of his book to have a nosy at. So here is my review!
So Requiem, Changing Times is very fantasy heavy including all sorts of creatures like imps and orcs, Ogre’s and Werewolves. It is published by Olympia Publishers and came out September last year, according to Goodreads. It’s a chunky read at 462 pages and is a bigger than average page size. As usual I’ll include the synopsis below:
Clint and Corbin are having a weird day. Best friends for life, things are getting a little strange around their town, and at school. When they’re followed by a strange man looking for Clint and later attacked by an imp, it makes sense to retreat to the safety of home. But when strangers from another world, Banks and O’Neil, arrive with their medley of allies, things get even weirder. Why are they here? What do they want? And what is the Requiem that everyone keeps talking about? As Clint and his friends and family are drawn deeper into a thrilling adventure, only one thing is for sure. They may not be getting out alive. And class with Mrs Christenson will seem like a walk in the park after this.
So this story follows the adventures of a couple of teens as their whole world kind of gets thrown upside down. Clint and Corbin undertake a huge responsibility of saving two worlds when this group of strange people appear in their homes. Chased down by evil orcs and imps and one scary sounding Spell-binder, it’s a fight to find The Requiem for both teams. The question is who will find it first? And who will make it out alive?
I really enjoyed this book. I found the storyline to be something very unique and I’ve never come across anything like it before. I got a LOTR meets current times vibe from it and I’m loving it. I found myself on edge, rooting for the good guys to win and waiting rather impatiently for what will come next. It has it’s funny elements too, I love O’Neil as a character. He brings a bit of lightness to the story, adding a nice lift to serious events so as not to let the book get too dark. He’s very comical and endearing as a character and you cannot fault his loyalty.
I loved the character development in characters such as Grant and Tamara that really grew through the book. How Grant over comes his fears to help look for Tamara and how Tamara learns to be kind to herself meaning she can be kind to others. It makes them seem like real people and really helps build a bond between the character and reader making you respond to them more.
I loved the use of so many fantasy creatures, I am a big sci-fi and fantasy fan so I could easily get on board with this book. If you struggle with fictional creature characters this may not be for you, but I really enjoyed it and found it to be well done. It wasn’t cheesy at all and didn’t feel fairytale-ish. It read like an action-packed movie.
I do feel like the reaction of the final good bye between Clint’s parents and the whole family was a tiny bit played down. There wasn’t much of a personal goodbye between the kids and their parents, but I guess in a war or a life and death situation you wouldn’t really get much time for farewells. It does end on a bit of a cliff hanger and we don’t get all of the answers, so I am hoping this means there will be another book. If there is, you know I will be straight on that, ready to find out what happens next.
All in all, I really, really enjoyed this read. It was action-packed and so different from the usual reads. It sets itself up nicely for a saga to come from it, which is an exciting prospect. The characters are well defined and developed. I cannot fault it. I’d recommend this to sci-fi and fantasy fans, action fans and anyone who likes a book that is pure adventure. R J Parker has really created a rare kind of book here. I love it!
