She Didn’t See It Coming: An Enigmatic Ride Through Domestic Suspense

There’s something undeniably captivating about a book that lures you in with its title, especially when it’s penned by the delightful Shari Lapena. As a fan of gripping mysteries that spin everyday situations into a web of intrigue, I couldn’t resist diving into She Didn’t See It Coming. Especially with the talented January LaVoy narrating—her voice has this magnetic quality that makes even the mundane feel thrilling.

From the very start, Lapena hooks us with an ominous prologue. Bryden Frost is running late to pick up her three-year-old daughter, Clara, when a brief glance at her phone results in a fateful rear-end collision with a sleek Tesla. The promise of trouble is thrust upon us like the very crash that sets the stage for the unfolding drama. Fast forward to the present, and Bryden doesn’t arrive at preschool to pick up Clara, setting off a spiral of anxiety that grips both her family and the reader.

The characters are a delicious blend of ordinary and suspiciously intriguing. Bryden’s husband, Sam, becomes the immediate target of the investigators, while quirky neighbor Henry Kemp, the enigmatic Tesla driver Derek, and Bryden’s closest confidants—her sister Lizzie and best friend Paige—up the ante. Each character brings their own secrets and shadows, making you question everyone’s motives. In true Lapena style, I found myself second-guessing my suspicions at every turn; just when I thought I had a handle on it, new twists made me reconsider. I suspected just about everyone, only to find myself narrowing down the field of potential culprits. It felt like a fun game, trying to piece the clues together with Bryden’s family and friends.

One of the standout elements of Lapena’s writing is her brisk pacing and cliffhanger chapters that make "just one more chapter" an irresistible mantra. Every time I thought I’d reached a natural stopping point, another revelation would pull me deeper into the mystery. I genuinely appreciated how Lapena crafts her narrative to keep readers engaged—there’s never a lag, and the tension builds organically until the very end.

Let’s not overlook the last few sentences. They were a "chef’s kiss" moment that left me with a sense of satisfaction while also letting my imagination roam free. The resolution was clever—no cliffhanger but still a tantalizing hint of what could follow, leaving me both satisfied and eager for Lapena’s next offering.

For anyone who enjoys domestic thrillers, psychological suspense, or simply a solid who-done-it, She Didn’t See It Coming is an absolute must-read. It speaks to the heart of what makes suspense so riveting: the idea that something dark can lie just beneath the surface of everyday life. Thanks to the Chandler Public Library for the loan of both the Audible and written copies, I had an immersive experience that kept me on the edge of my seat—not just in plot, but in the exploration of relationships and trust.
