A Cozy Return to Dream Harbor: A Review of The Gingerbread Bakery

It’s official: I can see what all the Laurie Gilmore hype is about! As the holiday season looms, I found myself drawn to The Gingerbread Bakery, the fifth installment in the Dream Harbor series. Maybe it was the promise of cozy Christmas vibes or the allure of a second-chance romance—whatever it was, I couldn’t resist diving into Annie and Mac’s story.

Set against the backdrop of a quaint small town, the novel is centered around Annie, a bakery owner who unexpectedly reconnects with her ex-fling, Mac. If you’ve ever had those bittersweet feelings about someone from your past, you’ll appreciate the tension that bubbles between these two. Annie holds a deep resentment for Mac for leaving both her and their hometown behind, yet their paths intertwine once more as they find themselves part of the same wedding party. I can’t say I blame Annie for being frustrated. Who wouldn’t be mad at an old flame who ghosted them?

What really captivated me was the well-executed timeline that alternates between past and present. This narrative style not only enriched the character development but also heightened my investment in their journey. I loved how it showed rather than told, painting a fuller picture of Annie and Mac’s history. It kept me engaged and eager to find out how they would navigate their complicated emotions.

Laurie Gilmore’s writing style is like a warm hug—super easy to follow, and it made the pages fly by. Though I wouldn’t categorize this as a “short” romance, it sure felt like it because I was utterly absorbed. I kept wishing for just one more chapter! The characters felt real and relatable; their struggles and desires tugged at my heartstrings. With each passing scene, I found myself cheering for them to overcome their differences.

One of the highlights for me was the book’s enchanting atmosphere, brimming with sweet Christmas vibes. Honestly, I found myself craving gingerbread cookies and peppermint hot cocoa while I read! It beautifully captures that cozy, nostalgic feeling we all associate with the holiday season. It’s perfect for those who appreciate a seasonal read, offering warmth and cheer that could put anyone in the festive spirit.
