What inspired you to start writing?
My journey into writing was inspired by a heartfelt desire to share messages of faith, hope, and love with children and their families. As a psychiatrist and a passionate hobbyist artist, I’ve always been captivated by the power of emotions and the stories that bring them to life. Through writing and illustrating in vibrant, realistic watercolor styles, I aim to nurture young hearts with meaningful narratives. Guided by my faith, my family, and a lifelong love of storytelling, I feel deeply called to create books that not only spark joy and imagination but also help children feel valued, cherished, and connected to the boundless love of God.

What does success mean to you? What is the definition of success?
To me, success is when my message nurtures young hearts and helps children understand that God’s love reaches out to each and every one of them. The choice to respond is theirs, but knowing they are unconditionally loved and cherished by God is the foundation I hope to instill.

Is writing your full-time career? Or would you like it to be?
I aspire to divide my time between writing and practicing psychiatry, dedicating half of my efforts to each. This balance allows me to pursue my passion for storytelling while continuing to support and care for my patients.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
My most unique writing quirk is that I illustrate while I write, letting the visuals and story evolve together in harmony.

Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?
definitely!

Are there any projects or books you working on now?
The next book I’m working on is about a grumpy great-grandpa who humorously tries to hide from God.

What is different about your book compared to other books in your genre?
One thing that sets Kandy’s Secret Friend apart in the Christian children’s book genre is the way it blends heartfelt storytelling with a fresh approach to spiritual themes. The story explores emotions like loneliness and the desire for connection—feelings that children often experience but might not know how to express. Through Kandy’s secret friend, I introduce Christian values like faith, prayer, and God’s love in a way that feels natural and engaging for young readers, rather than overly formal or didactic.
Another unique aspect is that I illustrated the book myself, using a watercolor style that’s more realistic than the typical children’s book. I wanted the illustrations to feel warm and relatable, helping kids immerse themselves in the story while reflecting the beauty of God’s creation. This realistic yet artistic approach is something I’m particularly proud of because it makes the book visually distinct.
The story itself also stands out because it brings a creative twist to traditional Christian themes. Kandy’s secret friend is an imaginative and comforting presence, embodying kindness and spirituality in a way that feels both magical and deeply grounded in faith. As a psychiatrist, I’ve always been drawn to understanding emotions, and I think that perspective allowed me to create a story that’s empathetic and authentic, while still being fun and inspiring for kids.
Ultimately, I think Kandy’s Secret Friend offers a unique blend of imagination, emotional depth, and visual beauty that makes it a standout in its genre.

What are the words you live by?
I deeply believe that a child is never at fault for the actions of others. Children are inherently innocent, and they deserve to be protected, nurtured, and loved unconditionally. As adults, it’s our responsibility to create a safe environment for them to grow, learn, and thrive, free from guilt or blame for situations beyond their control. This belief shapes the stories I write, as I aim to convey messages of hope, self-worth, and the unwavering love of God. Through my books, I want every child to know they are cherished and that their value is never defined by the mistakes or behaviors of others.

What is your favorite quote from your book?
Sophie says, “Come with me to church. You can meet Jesus there, but don’t expect to see Him with your eyes. He is invisible.
“Just like me!” Kandy says quickly without thinking.
