ARC Review: Famous Last Words (New York Thunder #1) by Shann McPherson

From the moment I stumbled upon Famous Last Words, the captivating first installment in the New York Thunder series by Shann McPherson, I was instantly intrigued. With its delicious blend of hockey romance, witty banter, and a fake dating trope that promises all the feels, I knew I was in for a treat. Having recently become a fan of sports romances, I felt a tingle of excitement, and I’m thrilled to tell you that this book exceeded my every expectation.

A Perfect Union of Characters and Conflict

At the heart of the story are Fran Keller, a savvy New York City real estate agent, and Robbie Mason, a reformed bad boy hockey player whose reputation desperately needs polishing. Their paths cross in the most unusual way: Robbie purchases a lavish six-million-dollar apartment from Fran, and in return, Fran agrees to pretend to be Robbie’s girlfriend. Their relationship starts as a way to improve Robbie’s public image, but oh boy, does it evolve quickly!

What struck me about both characters was their depth and growth. Fran is not just a real estate agent; she’s a curvy, sassy FMC with ambition and heart, ready to navigate her professional life while dodging the emotional landmines of her past with Robbie—her high school nemesis. And Robbie? He’s sweet yet cocky, a cinnamon roll of a man who genuinely cares for those around him. Watching his protective nature, especially his relationship with his mom, made him leap right onto my book boyfriend list. Their chemistry is palpable, and the tension that builds between them is steamy enough to send shivers down your spine—a definite highlight!

Writing Style and Memorable Moments

Shann McPherson’s writing is vibrant and engaging, with a knack for blending humor with heartfelt moments. The pacing was spot on; I found myself unable to put the book down, laughing one moment and holding back tears the next. The witty banter between Fran and Robbie is particularly memorable. I couldn’t help but giggle at their playful exchanges, and often, I was blushing at their undeniable chemistry. One particular passage that resonated with me was Robbie’s light-hearted remark about “having a lazy John Hughes Day” — it perfectly encapsulated the nostalgia and warmth woven throughout the narrative, making me feel truly connected to the characters.

A Must-Read Recommendation

Overall, Famous Last Words is not just a love story; it’s a well-crafted, heartfelt exploration of personal growth and second chances. With tropes like enemies to lovers and fake dating, combined with the sweet moments I adore in a romance, this book is a perfect fit for anyone who enjoys a bit of spice with their reading. With 5 stars in my books and a 3.5 on the spice scale, I can confidently say that it’s a must-read for fans of the genre.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Shann McPherson and Luna Literary Management for the ARC opportunity—this story was an absolute gem, and I’m eagerly anticipating the sequel.
