Going Overboard: An Entertaining, Predictable Escape into Romance

Have you ever picked up a book that simply feels like a warm hug? That’s exactly how I felt diving into Going Overboard by Portia Macintosh. This charming read caught my attention with its delicious premise—romance and drama on a cruise ship—who could resist? After enjoying her previous work, I was eager to see how she would deliver this time around. I’m grateful to Boldeoodbooks and @netgalley for the advanced copy; as always, my thoughts are purely my own.

At the heart of Going Overboard is Jessa, a character that feels both relatable and endearing. We first meet her at a bar, where she’s saved from an overzealous suitor by a mysterious guy who flits away as quickly as he arrives. As the story unfolds, we fast-forward a few years to Jessa’s tumultuous romances. Picture this: she’s at a wedding, heartbreakingly dumped mid-dance, only to further complicate matters by encountering her ex with a new girlfriend. Enter Brody, the best man and seemingly perfect partner-in-crime for her whimsical quest of navigating heartbreak and faux relationships.

The book thrives on themes of friendship and self-discovery, encapsulated beautifully in Jessa’s journey. As she partners with Brody at their friends’ wedding to one-up their exes, it becomes a delightful mix of humor and heartfelt moments. The banter between them is genuinely hilarious—Macintosh captures that electric chemistry just right. I found myself chuckling at their antics, especially the sequence involving the shared room with the exes—it was cringe-worthy yet comically relatable.

One element I particularly appreciated was the cruise setting. It added an element of escapism, with plenty of activities and settings that kept the plot lively and engaging. The pacing felt just right, allowing me to settle into Jessa and Brody’s evolving relationship without feeling rushed. Even with some predictable elements—yes, you can see a few twists coming from a mile away—I enjoyed the ride. There’s comfort in predictability when it’s woven together with such charm.

However, I have to be honest—there were moments of repetition that felt a tad frustrating. Still, I found myself justifying it as I delved more into Jessa’s character. I resonated deeply with her clumsiness and vulnerability, and in the end, that’s what made the journey worthwhile. I often wish for epilogues, wanting a glimpse of my favorite couples post-book, and this was no exception. I was thoroughly invested in Jessa and Brody; I wanted to follow them beyond the pages.

It’s a wonderful escape into another world, ideal for those who need a break from reality or simply seek a light-hearted love story. If you’re like me and find enjoyment in clumsy heroines navigating love and life’s curveballs, this book is tailor-made for you. It left me with a smile and an eagerness for more from Portia Macintosh. Now, who’s ready to join me on this cruise? ❤️
