Book Review: His Juliet (Empire of Royals, #2) by Anya Winter
I’ve been in a reading slump lately, and the moment I heard that Anya Winter’s latest installment, His Juliet, was available, I knew it was time to escape back into the world of romance! After the gripping, emotional ride that was the first book in the Empire of Royals series, my expectations were sky-high. While this sequel brought its own spark, it was a bumpy journey that left me both satisfied and craving just a bit more.
His Juliet channels the beloved trope of strangers to friends to lovers, and oh, does it deliver on the spice factor with a bold 🌶🌶🌶 rating! We meet our lead characters, Romeo and Juliet, in a way that’s utterly cinematic. Their initial chemistry is electric; I was hooked from the first banter-filled interactions. The truth or dare game? My heart was racing—talk about playful tension! Romeo is a darkly charming mix of grump and sunshine, managing to be both humorous and deeply caring towards his Juliet. I mean, a mafia underboss who crocheting? That’s a win in my book!
Though I admired Romeo’s multilayered personality—flirting one moment and secretly tender the next—Juliet felt a little less defined in comparison. Sure, her struggle with past trauma and mental health was deeply relatable and authentically portrayed, but I found myself wishing for a bit more depth beyond her issues. Her journey toward overcoming her challenges felt poignant; every little victory made my heart swell—yet there were times I felt she was reduced to her trauma. I would have loved to see her shine brighter amidst the shadows.
The connection between these two was beautifully written and comforting, echoing the type of love we all yearn for. Their midnight conversations and text message exchanges dripped with sweetness, reminding me of the kind of connection that can sustain you. I wanted every person to have their own Romeo to navigate through life’s ups and downs. The side characters also added enriching layers; I felt my heart melt at Juliet’s bond with Matteo and rejoiced at Elira finally claiming her power.
One of the emotional peaks of the narrative is its grey themes, expertly balanced to create heart-wrenching moments that left me in tears, especially towards the end. The plot twist felt earned and made my emotional investment worthwhile, leading to their beautiful happily-ever-after. Yet, I couldn’t shake off the sense of something lacking, especially when juxtaposing it with the first book.
As I reached the final chapters, I couldn’t help but crave more, especially with those enticing honeymoon bonus chapters that left me blushing! Despite its minor shortcomings, His Juliet remains a solid entry into the series. I think this book will resonate most with readers who enjoy dark romance, relatable emotional journeys, and captivating love stories wrapped in the complexities of family and the mafia.
So, if you’re in the mood for a gripping read with a touch of steam, you might just find your own Romeo in this delightful tale. After all, aren’t we all searching for our perfect blend of dark and light? Happy reading!
