Review of Swept Away by Beth O’Leary

When I first came across Swept Away by Beth O’Leary, I was immediately intrigued by the premise—a romance set adrift on a boat! As a fan of quirky plots, I felt a pull, curious to see how the author would navigate the inevitable choppy waters of such an unconventional setting. I must say, this book certainly had its ups and downs, offering a unique blend of romance, self-discovery, and a dash of peril.

At the heart of the story is thirty-one-year-old Lexi, who has devoted herself to caring for her best friend Penny’s daughter, Mae. Lexi embodies the selfless spirit many of us can relate to, often putting others’ needs before our own. However, when her boss nudges her to seek a little fun and break free from her routine, Lexi’s world turns upside down. Enter Zeke—at just twenty-three, he’s grappling with his own familial issues and a quest for love. The chemistry between them ignites during a stormy night that leads to an unforgettable one-night stand on a houseboat. However, things take a quick turn for the worse when they wake up lost at sea!

O’Leary’s writing style shines through as she develops Lexi and Zeke’s characters over the twelve days they spend adrift. I found myself genuinely rooting for their growth—a journey that mirrors their physical ordeal. Initially, Lexi and Zeke seemed quite shallow, but as the story progresses, their vulnerabilities begin to surface, transforming them into more relatable figures. This depth was a breath of fresh air; their individual backgrounds and struggles added emotional layers that made me care about their fates.

However, I encountered a few waves during my reading experience. The concept of “insta-love” raised some red flags for me. Despite their initial fling, the deep connection Zeke professes felt rushed and unbalanced, especially considering the environment they found themselves in. Furthermore, Lexi’s intense attachment to Mae struck me as potentially unhealthy—while her maternal instincts are heartwarming, it sometimes blurred the lines of their relationship in an unsettling way.

Another aspect that gave me pause was the believability of their predicament. For two characters navigating a dire situation, they seemed to have an unfathomable reservoir of resources. I rarely felt the severe danger that should come with being lost at sea, largely because Zeke was quite literally whipping up meals throughout their ordeal. This lack of tension diluted the stakes for me.

Nonetheless, I appreciated the clever premise and the genuine emotional arcs, which culminated in a sweet, albeit slightly fantastical, ending. O’Leary crafts a narrative that, despite the rough patches, ultimately left me feeling satisfied. For those who enjoy a mix of adventure with their romance—and don’t mind a sprinkle of escapism—Swept Away might be just the ticket.

In conclusion, while it may not find itself nestled in my list of all-time favorites, Swept Away made for an engaging journey filled with character growth and unique twists. I’m delighted I boarded this ship of a story, and I think many readers looking for an entertaining escape with heart will find joy in this adventure. Publication is set for April 1, 2025, so keep an eye out!
