The Spite Date: A Delightful Rom-Com that Shines

When I first heard that Pippa Grant was releasing a new standalone romantic comedy, I couldn’t contain my excitement. As a long-time fan of her witty storytelling and unforgettable characters, I was practically counting down the days until I could dive into The Spite Date. And oh, what a delightful romp it turned out to be! Thank you so much, Pippa, for sending me this ARC—it was an absolute joy to read.

At the heart of The Spite Date lies an unconventional yet captivating premise: After a series of antics involving Bea, a spirited local burger bus owner, and Simon, a famous British actor raising teenage twins with his ex-wife-turned-best-friend, we’re propelled into a tale of unexpected connections and hilarious chaos. When Bea finds herself arrested due to her sons’ mischief, Simon reluctantly agrees to a date with her, which turns out to be fuelled more by spite than spark—though sparks inevitably fly.

I loved how Grant explored the theme of family in this novel. Bea’s relationship with her brothers is beautifully fleshed out, showcasing the deep bonds that can blossom through shared experiences, including hardships. It was so uplifting to witness Bea, a woman who has faced her fair share of challenges, find her happiness and a shot at her happily-ever-after. Her character radiates strength and resilience, making it impossible not to root for her.

As for Simon? He is every bit as charming as I hoped he’d be. Picture a golden retriever in human form (yes, I went there!), combined with the struggles of single-parenting and the awkwardness that comes with navigating new relationships. His easygoing nature and genuine intentions captured my heart right from the start. Watching Bea and Simon fall for each other—despite their tumultuous beginnings—was a beautiful slow burn that kept me engaged throughout.

Grant’s writing style is, as always, a delightful mix of humor and heart. The pacing flows smoothly, interlacing laugh-out-loud moments with tender scenes that tug at the heartstrings. I found myself giggling at the antics of Bea’s brothers and Simon’s sons; they’re a hilarious, complex mix that adds rich layers to the story. Moments of chaos, like Bea’s brothers scheming or Simon’s sons plotting their next move, had me laughing out loud.

One particular line that resonated with me was about finding love in the least expected places, a beautifully woven theme that highlights the serendipitous nature of relationships. It reminds us that sometimes, the best connections can stem from the most unlikely circumstances—a gentle nod to the magic of life.
