Title: Unraveling the Hilarity in the Darkness: A Review of Verity by Colleen Hoover

When I picked up Verity by Colleen Hoover, I was expecting a thrilling dive into psychological suspense, but what I got was a gut-busting experience wrapped in darkness. The blend of chills and chuckles had me questioning everything about the genre—and I was here for it. So, let’s talk about those wild twists and turns (and plenty of giggles) as we unpack this novel together.

At the heart of Verity is our main character, Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who steps in to complete an established author’s manuscript after a tragic incident leaves the latter incapacitated. Enter Verity, the enigmatic, and quite frankly, infuriating author whose life story and secrets unravel through Lowen’s eyes. However, the pacing felt like Lowen was reading at a snail’s pace; I couldn’t help but wonder how anyone could take weeks to digest 19 chapters! I would have devoured that in an hour, no problem!

But that pacing isn’t just an oversight—it reflects the overall tension Hoover builds. It’s almost as if Lowen’s state of mind bleeds into the reader’s experience, where the comedy pokes through unexpectedly. I mean, who knew a creepy thriller could be this funny? As I followed Lowen’s melodramatic encounters with Verity’s bizarre antics—think ghostly apparitions designed to scare the living daylights out of her—I couldn’t help but chuckle. Is it bad that I was rooting for the so-called villain, Verity? She had me in stitches as she wreaked havoc like a mischievous specter, making my heart race in a delightful blend of horror and humor.

Lowen, meanwhile, became a character I couldn’t quite connect with. I found myself erasing her name from memory—was it Loren? Rowan? All I knew was that every time she opened her mouth about Verity, my eye twitched. Her reactions were over-the-top, as if she were auditioning for a soap opera. Seriously, I was envisioning Verity’s head turning and giggling at the chaos unfolding around her, so when Lowen whined about Verity’s past, I couldn’t help but laugh.

And while I didn’t come for the romance, I walked away questioning Jeremy’s choices. What leads a man to fixate on someone with a past bloody enough to challenge a horror movie? The romance felt bland, even with the occasional steamy moments. I mean, were they two pieces of wood bumping into each other? Yikes. Yet the tension and comedic flair made up for the romance that fell flat.

As I reflect on the ending, I find it hard to care much about it—though the debates around it are as entertaining as the book itself. After all, Verity is undeniably a force of chaos. I’m convinced she relished in her ā€˜vegetative’ state, leaving readers craving more chaos as she mischievously toyed with everyone around her.

Ultimately, Verity may not be for everyone. However, if you can appreciate a tale that serves up horror with a hefty side of laughter, then this book is your cup of tea. Colleen Hoover managed to keep me entertained, even if Lowen and Jeremy left much to be desired. If you find yourself reveling in comic horror and can embrace the absurdity of it all, then grab this book—it’s a wild ride you won’t want to miss.

So, who’s in for a reading session filled with some deliciously dark yet comedic twists? I promise you, if you go in with the right expectations, you’re in for a surprisingly fun experience!
