Here is another review! This book that I am sharing my thoughts on today is one I got for Christmas, I believe. I’d seen it about every time I went into a bookstore and I’ve finally gave up and read it. This is I Looked Away by Jane Corry.
I Looked Away is described as a “fearsomely good thriller” by Nicci French (as seen on the front of the book). It was published by Penguin Books UK in June 2019. I will drop the synopsis below:
Every Monday, 49-year-old Ellie looks after her grandson Josh. She loves him more than anyone else in the world. The only thing that can mar her happiness is her husband’s affair. But he swears it’s over, and Ellie has decided to be thankful for what she’s got.
Then one day, while she’s looking after Josh, her husband gets a call from that woman. And just for a moment, Ellie takes her eyes off her grandson. What happens next will change her life for ever.

Jane Corry writes this book from multiple perspectives. Ellie and Jo and there’s also what read like diary entries inter-spaced throughout too. The story follows Ellie, a woman who has known true hardships and loss. The book tells us about her childhood and family relationships and how major and traumatic events moulded her future. It also follows Jo, a homeless lady who travels around the UK, eluding her past. Always watching her back. But how are these two women connected? The book soon tells you that!
I’m back in my comfort zone with this one. We all know, I love a good thriller. And this book is just that. I absolutely loved this book. It was emotional and pacy and so, so twisty. I don’t think at any point I knew how it was going to end, I struggled to even make a prediction. It had me on edge all the way through reading it. I felt like a little detective. This book covers some very sensitive subjects too and I believe Corry touches upon this with great sensitivity, and does so tastefully. It covers things such as emotional abuse, murder, being homeless, sexual assault, mental health issues among others and none of them are done so in bad taste.
I love the characters as well, every person seemed like genuine people. Relationships were well developed and plausible. The story was so well pieced together it felt like real life, as if it was something that was playing out in front of me, on the news or something. It was seamless the whole way through. There really isn’t anything that I can find negative about this book. I really enjoyed reading it and I, no word of a lie, got through it in a day and it isn’t exactly a small book. Entirely un-put-down-able.
All in all, I loved this book. I would definitely recommend, especially to those who love thrillers or just like books that read like a puzzle. The kind that really keep you on your toes.
