My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix

By  BookishBearx

Hello, lovely readers. I never usually set New Year Resolutions, but next year I think I may have to make one for posting regularly… what do you think? Sorry it has been a while, I have been reading lots of books. I just haven’t been able to find a moment to sit down and write up my thoughts about them until now. I am also toying with the how I post reviews. Up until now, I think I tend to review more or less every book that I read on here, and I don’t think that is the best way for me to go anymore. So I am working on new content and new formats for reviews. But, you’re not here to read me waffling, you’re here for a review.

High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act… different. She’s moody. She’s irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she is nearby.

Abby’s investigation leads her to some startling discoveries – and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

Like an unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist, My Best Friend’s Exorcism blends teen angst, adolescent drama, unspeakable horrors, and a mix of ’80s pop songs into a pulse-pounding supernatural thriller.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism is a Young Adult, Supernatural Thriller. The edition I have was published by Quirk Books on 11th July 2017 and spans 332 pages. It was also awarded the Goodreads Choice Award for Horror (2016). I came across this book on Bookstagram. I saw it included on multiple accounts and then @evasbookcorner posted a review on it and that’s what really drew my attention to this book.

I went into this with high hopes, as most reviews that I had seen were incredibly positive and I do love the Horror genre. I can say it wasn’t quite what I was expecting but I really enjoyed it all the same. I found it to be an incredibly quirky book. The characters were incredibly likeable, reminiscent of the kinds of characters I found in childhood teen movies. The book was full of humour and emotion as well as creepy moments. I found it was a good all-rounder, with something for everyone.

I loved the relationship between the two main characters Gretchen and Abby. The two girls are that dream friendship that I think every girl wants when they’re young. That best friend that you do everything with and have absolutely no judgement from. Both characters are developed so well throughout the book and the way they have been written make it very hard not to root for them. Hendrix makes you fall in love with his characters, resulting in you wanting nothing but the best happy ending for them!

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book for horror lovers and those that want to try the horror genre, without having to read something that is overly gory. There is some really sad, creepy and weird scenes in this book but there’s aspects of humour and friendship that add a lightness to the book with bring in a lovely balance. I would definitely read again!
