Home body is the third poetry book from the well loved poet, Rupi Kaur. The first two books being Milk and Honey, and The Sun and Her Flowers. Rupi Kaur became very popular seemingly overnight with her debut Milk and Honey, for her raw and honest poetry. This newest collection was release in November 2020 under Simon and Schuster and has is a Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Poetry (2020). In this book Kaur takes her readers on an reflective and intimate journey where she delves into her past and present and her self potential too.
I am a big fan of Rupi Kaur, I’ll be straight up and honest with you. She is my favourite poet, and I recommend her books to everyone I come across. So when I found out that home body was being released towards the end of this horrible year, I did the biggest, geekiest happy dance ever. FINALLY SOMETHING GOOD FROM 2020!! I held this book to very high standards. I feel it’s a standard within my own reading taste that only my favourite authors (Rupi Kaur being one of them) can really meet in my head. I definitely wasn’t disappointed.
I devoured this book in one sitting. It literally only took me an hour to read. I couldn’t put it down, and it is already calling my name to read again. The book is split into sections: mind; heart; rest; awake. It feature Rupi Kaur’s distinctive and beautiful art work like her previous books. The poems are stunning beautiful, raw and poignant. They evoke so much emotion, and make you reflect on yourself. There are a lot of topics that Rupi Kaur covers, that are close to my own heart. They’re things that I have personally had to deal with and her poems really do speak to that part of me that had to go through it.
I will say that her work does tend to touch on some difficult topics, like sexual assault or damaging relationships, so for some it would be smart to read with caution. But I find her poems to be so important and so stunning. I will always have a massive soft spot in my heart for this woman’s art. I don’t think I’d ever find it hard to love any this she writes.
I think it’s safe to say, I liked this book and I would 100% recommend. It brought a little light and excitement into a rather dull year.
